SPACE Treatment

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment. Rather than placing focus on the child, SPACE helps parents and caregivers change how they respond to anxiety in ways that build confidence and resilience.

What Is SPACE?

SPACE was developed through the Yale Child Study Center as a parent-based treatment for children and teens struggling with anxiety, OCD, phobias, panic, separation anxiety, and related challenges.

Unlike traditional therapy models that focus primarily on changing the child’s behavior directly, SPACE works with parents and caregivers to help shift patterns that can unintentionally keep anxiety cycles going.

The goal is not to eliminate distress completely, but to help children build greater flexibility, resilience, and confidence in navigating difficult emotions and situations.

How Does SPACE Work?

In SPACE, parents learn practical, compassionate strategies for responding to anxious behaviors in new ways. This includes increasing validation and emotional support, setting clear and consistent boundaries, and slowly reducing patterns of reassurance or avoidance that reinforce anxiety.

Because change happens through the parent or caregiver, children are not required to directly participate in SPACE sessions, though collaboration with the child is welcome when appropriate. Many families find relief in having a clear roadmap for how to respond when anxiety shows up at home, at school, or in daily routines.

What Can SPACE Help With?

SPACE is helpful for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents struggling with anxiety or anxiety-related behaviors, including:

  • Generalized anxiety

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Separation anxiety

  • Social anxiety

  • Avoidance behaviors (including school avoidance)

  • Fears and phobias

SPACE is particularly supportive for parents who feel stuck, burned out, or unsure how to help without unintentionally reinforcing anxiety. Because SPACE works by changing parental responses, it can be effective even when a child is resistant to therapy, overwhelmed, or not ready to engage directly in treatment.
